Northern Uganda
Portraits of Achet -Internally Displaced Persons Camp- Northern Uganda 2006.
For the past 20 years, one of Africa's longest running conflicts has been going on between the UPDF (Ugandan Army) and Joseph Kony's rebel force the LRA (Lords Resistence Army). Villagers have been tanslocated out of their small villages to the 'safety' of the camps. Achet is one of many camps in N. Uganda
which houses 30,000 members of the Acholi ethnic group. Due to it's remote and dangerous location in the jungle - rescources and amenities are scarce. Conditions are poor, malnutrition is endemic and diseases run high. The general morale of the people is low.
The Lords Resistance Army (LRA) is a Christian sectarian guerilla army operating in North Uganda, South Sudan and East Congo.Led by Joesph Kony who proclaims himself "spirit medium" of the Holy Sprirt or "spokes person" of God.The LRA abducts children, sexually enslaves women and is known for wide spread murder and mutilation throughout the region. The sadness is that the majority of rebels who commit such human rights violations, were themselves obducted at an early age and forced to particpate in hostilities.
