Northern Uganda

Portraits of Achet -Internally Displaced Persons Camp- Northern Uganda 2006.

For the past 20 years, one of Africa's longest running conflicts has been going on between the UPDF (Ugandan Army) and Joseph Kony's rebel force the LRA (Lords Resistence Army). Villagers have been tanslocated out of their small villages to the 'safety' of the camps. Achet is one of many camps in N. Uganda

which houses 30,000 members of the Acholi ethnic group. Due to it's remote and dangerous location in the jungle - rescources and amenities are scarce. Conditions are poor, malnutrition is endemic and diseases run high. The general morale of the people is low.

The Lords Resistance Army (LRA) is a Christian sectarian guerilla army operating in North Uganda, South Sudan and East Congo.Led by Joesph Kony who proclaims himself "spirit medium" of the Holy Sprirt or "spokes person" of God.The LRA abducts children, sexually enslaves women and is known for wide spread murder and mutilation throughout the region. The sadness is that the majority of rebels who commit such human rights violations, were themselves obducted at an early age and forced to particpate in hostilities.

  • Ex - LRA rebels play football.
  • 14 year old Jakob Odigo stands in his deserted classroom. Jakob enjoys playing football but unlike normal teenagers he lives in the fear of being abducted or killed. Jakob has seen his friends, both girls and boys being abducted. {quote}When I see a man in uniform, I think will he be friendly and let me pass, or will he finish me off? Shall I run? I have to think fast, I am very scared. My parents have warned me to be alert all the time. If I sit under a tree alone, I can't relax, I feel afraid.{quote}
  • James Owiny Luwala- Chief of Puranga- (Joseph Kony's chief), now lives in an IDP camp having been evacuated from his village.
  • Chief of Puranga and the local councillor meet in the chiefs office in the IDP camp.

  •  The Chief of Puranga (Joseph Kony's chief) sits below his leapoard skin in a small concrete room in the IDP camp and tells us of his views on Kony.{quote} Who is a wild dog best handled by? It's owner. Kony is a child who has come from this place. He would be handled better by his father and his chief (with refference to Musevinis government). The strongest disease can be cured by the simplist medicine. The present government is deliberately undermining the cheifs.....without power I am in a very bad position.{quote}
  • A boy stands in his deserted classroom. The school was forced to close down as heavy fighting between the LRA & UPDF ensued.
  • Jakob Odigo stands where his school desk once was,{quote}When I see a man in uniform, I think will he be friendly and let me pass, or will he finish me off? Shall I run? I have to think fast, I am very scared. My parents have warned me to be alert all the time. If I sit under a tree alone, I can't relax, I feel afraid.{quote}

  • Lucy Achen lived amongst the rebels for 10 years. She was involved in fierce fighting between the Arabs of S. Sudan and the UPDF. It was in battle between the UPDF where she was captured and taken to a rehabilliation centre in N. Uganda. Her mother came to see her here and did not recognize her at first.
  • Lucy Acen an ex-child soldier is now housed in Acet IDP camp. Here she feels isolated and rejected by the community. Despite her hardship she does not want retribution. {quote}I feel there should be mediation. After all they have failed to arrest Kony and getting hold of him might be a problem because he still has some kind of magic about him....Kony should be convinced to come home so we the Acholi people can go home.{quote} Joseph Kony disappeared to the jungle from Helen's village 20 years ago. He has never been seen by the villagers since.
